Underfloor Heating System: Insights & Advantages

Underfloor heating systems are one of the fastest growing home improvement projects in the UK and Tailored Heat has sustained a continuous growth of its underfloor heating offerings. The design team has been working on a range of projects including housing developments and apartments. Previously, around 43,000m2 of underfloor heating was designed and supported by Tailored Heat. This involves room-by-room assessments and system calculations, all undertaken by our in-house engineers.

Insights to an Underfloor Heating System

An underfloor heating system heats a room’s floor structure which warms the room itself. This is achieved in a “wet” underfloor heating system by passing heated water through plastic or composite pipes which are installed in the floor. Our engineers at Tailored Heat conduct property evaluations and heat loss calculations for each room that requires underfloor heating.

Outputs

Water temperature influences heat output as well as the pipe spacing. Pipe distance for a concrete floor is c/c 200mm and for timber suspended floors c/c 200mm. The maximum underfloor heating output for underfloor heating in a concrete floor is 100 W/sqm, the maximum heat output for a timber suspended floor is 70 W/sqm.

Floor Coverings

Similarly, outputs also influenced by floor covering and floor construction. Underfloor heating is normally designed to have a maximum floor surface temperature of 29C in occupied areas, 35C in peripheral areas and 33C in bathrooms. Furthermore, the most common floor coverings that Tailored Heat Supplies sees used with underfloor heating are tiles and stone, carpet with underlay  and timbers with and without underlay.  Tailored Heat provides detailed system design, product specifications, total heat outputs, individual underfloor loop outputs and detailed flow rates for each individual property.

Temperature Controls

Typically, an underfloor heating system is divided into control “zones” consisting of individual rooms or groups of rooms with similar heat loss. Also, they can share similar characteristics such as a kitchen and utility room. Each zone is controlled by its own room thermostat. The Advantages from having an Underfloor Heating System

There are numerous advantages an underfloor heating system can provide for your property from savings on energy and efficiency to adding additional value to the property. Once the system has been designed and installed, it doesn’t require much maintenance for both electric and water based underfloor heating. Should your project have multiple manifolds you will have a series of these points. Items included in an annual service are system pumps, actuators/motorised valves, and the system inhibitor. Pretty much all of these are a quick check whilst your plumber carries out your annual boiler service.

Consistent Desired Temperature

Another advantage is the superior all round comfort it gives to the property when heating through the floor due to the temperature being consistent around the room. Radiator systems rely on convection which usually means vying for a spot near the radiator to feel the heat. However, the flexibility of the room temperature the UFH system provides eliminates having to move closer for heat to the radiators. Each room has its own dedicated thermostat so each individual’s preference of how hot/cool the room is can be achieved by this ability of changing the temperature throughout the flooring.

Suitable for various floor coverings

One of the most appealing advantages to a property owner is that the UFH system can be designed in conjunction to the majority of floor surfaces such as vinyl, engineered wood, carpet and laminate. Hardwoods and engineered woods (both 18mm-22mm) are better heat conductors than soft woods. Soft woods will cause heat transfer problems with Under Floor Heating. Carpets and underlay with a low TOG rating are fine – below 1.5TOG is the British Standard. The higher the carpet TOG the higher the resistance to heat transfer which will result in a lower system output

Hygiene

Lastly, an undiscovered advantage by many yet one of the most important is that having an UFH system is more hygienic than standard heating through radiators. In fact, studies show that installing radiant heating in your home can reduce the amount of dust mites present by up to 80%. This is due to the fact floors remain cold and dampness at ground level  with radiators and convection heating; This gives the perfect breeding ground for the dreaded dust mites. In conclusion, the underfloor heating through the system makes the environment for dust mites too warm and dry for them to live. Overall, this eliminates the mites breeding.
