Radiator Heating Systems

Overview of Radiator Heating Systems

The use of the trusted radiator dominates the UK Central heating systems in the UK. With an ever-decreasing estimate of 5% with no central heating at all, the use of radiators in homes could be as high as 90% to 93%. Underfloor Heating led the way of efficient home heating and for a long time leaving radiators behind as the uncomfortable, inefficient predecessor.  However, the drive for low-temperature solutions and better system control generated a new generation of systems.

The range of radiators now includes double panel / double convection, dynamic boost effect, and low h2o versions to name a few. The drive towards high-efficiency has also led to a wider control availability and design consideration. The modern radiator system includes manifold distribution systems, pre-insulated pipe and individual room control. Overall, modern radiator systems are a highly efficient and comfortable form of heating.

Principle of a Modern Radiator Heating System

With a modern system, each radiator is connected to its independent hot water supply via a heating manifold. The manifold connects to the boiler or heat pump installation via primary pipe work.
As the room temperature in a room drops below the thermostat set point, a demand signal activates the heating system.  Warm water from the boiler circulates around the specific radiator within the system increasing the temperature within the room.
As the room achieves the desired temperature, the zone valve will close and the heat demand to the heat source will cease.

A more traditional plumbing method uses a single thermostat and a ring circuit where radiators are tee’d off. During a central heating system upgraded or refit, homeowners are opting for higher efficiency radiators and individual room control.

System Design & Expert Support

During the design process of a Radiator system, we take care in calculating individual room requirements, room aesthetics, and integration with the heat source. We appreciate that there becomes a cost and practicality consideration when designing a highly efficient radiator system.
Within our design method, we help you select a suitable control strategy. We will guide you through a range of suitable thermostats types, central heating timers, and optional weather compensation boiler controls.
