Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Systems (MVHR)

Overview of Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Systems (MVHR)

Many modern homes are extremely airtight and subsequently require an efficient way of removing stale air without increasing the heat demand or comfort levels. A Heat Recovery system recycles the heat from the outgoing air into the incoming air supply. Traditional systems simply exchanges warm air from the house with cold air from outside. By recycling the heat, an MVHR system helps to maintain the perfect comfort levels with the building and reduce the work rate of the heating system.

Principle of Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Systems (MVHR)

an MVHR system, in its basic form, is a heat exchange unit; simply replaces heat from one source to another. One channel carries air extracted from Kitchen, Utility Rooms and Bathrooms and fresh air transfers into Living areas via another channel. Each channel passed through the Heat Recovery unit that houses the heat exchanger. The Heat extracted from the outgoing warm air heats the incoming cold air. This filtered, warm air gently distributes around the house via subtle air ducts.

Typically, an MVHR system will reuse around 90% of the heat; a traditional air vent can create a heat demand as the air change rate is increased. This inevitably causes a heat demand within the house and an increased use of the boiler/heat pump.

System Design & Expert Support

We need to take into consideration a number of factors when correctly calculating and designing an MVHR system. Initially, we will consider the heat demands and air volumes of each room, cross-reference the type of heating installed. We also need to consider the correct extraction rates and applicable building regulations and standards.
Furthermore, we take the time to consider the suitable location of air vents and room aesthetics and finally we design an installation schematic relating to joists, RSJs, and other construction elements.

We review our designs and whilst we like to think that our schematics are perfect we appreciate that the on-site installation may require adjustments. As our technical team is well versed with construction methods, site conditions, plumbing and mechanical services we can identify potential areas where rerouting may occur on site. Whilst this is a nature of the system, our design team can prepare the design and on-site materials as apt as possible.

Tailored Heat Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR)

We work very closely with a number of unit and duct manufacturers, we will assess the building needs and specify the best solution for the project. In many cases, other suppliers use one unit and have a limited range of ductwork available. We review each project technically, on a cost basis and consider the influence on other services within the project. This product is very much where multiple trades are influenced.
